Fresh clashes in the Rwenzori region

The situation remains tense at Nyabuswa trading centre in Karangura Sub County in Kabarole District following fresh attacks by the Kirumira Mutima organized criminal group agitating for the Yiira State republic.

The attacks started on Friday night after a UPDF soldier was killed by unknown people while in a bar at night.

The situation turned violent after the criminals tried to attack the policemen who were carrying out investigation about the deceased soldier.

People fleeing their homes

During the exchange with police, unconfirmed sources say that four of the attackers were killed. One policeman was also injured and is currently nursing wounds at the Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital Buhinga.

All shops at Nyabuswa trading center where the attacks started yesterday remain closed.

Women and children have fled their homes to the neighboring villages of Mugusu, Kicwamba, Karago and Fort Portal municipality.

Francis Byakagaba a resident of Nyabuswa told the New Vision that the attackers killed his cow last night and run away with the meat.

 

Nyabuswa health centre has been temporarily closed.

 

He says that threats of the attack started in mid-October this year.
