Kireka Chess Club vows to stay top

Kireka Chess Club boss Robert Were has vowed to continue motivating his players in a bid to attain positive results and maybe retain the national league title next season.

Were who played for the same club in the early 90's returned as the club manager in 2013 and three years down the road, Kireka has managed to secure the title.

"Paying your players well and supporting them to participate at any possible international events is enough and that's what Kireka is out to do," Were made the remarks at the teams' victory party at Gloria Gardens in Namugongo over the weekend.  

They put up a surprise performance as they beat five-time champions DMark 4-1 in the final round of the league two weeks back to emerge champions after over 20 years of drought.

While their colleagues Haruna Nsubuga and Simon Gonza drew with DMark's Patrick Kawuma and Walter Okas to take a 4-1 victory and move to 25points at the top of the table with a point ahead of five time champions DMark with 24pts.

Meanwhile at the same dinner DMark's boss Steven Kawuma assured his rivals,  "They have only this season to enjoy the title victory but they shouldn't expect any other," he said.
