Minimalism and retro at Kampala Fashion Week

Minimalism in fashion is when a designer shuns the traditional craftsmanship and concentrates on the specifics of form and fabric rather than the function of the garment as body covering

The third annual Kampala Fashion Week (KFW) was concluded over the weekend, at The Square, 1street industrial area, with a phenomenal three day fashion experience.

The show that was founded in 2014 by Gloria Wavamuno, in collaboration with LDJ Production, a US based company had an amazingly different feel this year; fashionistas were treated to a warm ambience, although the venue was not known by most Ugandans, and somewhat hard to maneuver especially because of the steep stairs, when one got there, at the 4th floor; it was like a whole new world.

The runway was global standard, with proper lighting. The refreshments area was on point. Then the pop-up point was thoughtful; fashion designers displayed their works for the fashionistas to view and get a one on one experience with them- selfies and chat time.

Day one saw Charles Ssemanda win 2016 SEED Show; a Show that has since 2014 been jointly founded by Ras Kasozi and US Embassy. This year Seed Show collaborated with KFW, thus their opening show. Ssemanda is now set to grace the 2017 Kampala Fashion Week, and also to be featured on the US Embassy Facebook page.

Day 2&3 was mainly runway shows, and the designers out did themselves on this one. Their construction and entire execution of outfits featured was very much on point, and in line with global fashion trend. The cuts were clean, they had less construction work done, but even then one could see the modern craftsmanship that detailed their garment structuring. This type of style in fashion is called the minimalistic.
