Government to cancel land titles around L.Victoria

In a bid to save Lake Victoria and improving water quality, government is considering the cancellation of land titles which were issued to various investors and individuals around the lake.

This, according to the state minister of water and environment, Mary Goreti Kitutu is aimed at saving the lake which continues to be degraded and polluted by industries and other business people.

"The National Water and Sewerage Cooperation had to extend its pipes deeper into the lake for cleaner water," she noted.

The minister was speaking at the opening of the International Water Stewardship Programme (IWaSP) regional conference at Speke Resort Munyonyo, in Kampala under the theme; "Making Water Stewardship Work for Water Security".

She said government also looks at restoring all wetlands and forests in the country as key water catchment areas for sustainable water flow.

He said out of 506 forest reserves in the country, 493 have been encroached on.

Kitutu said her ministry is already in partnerships under IWaSP with the private sector, Civil Society Organizations and communities for sustainable solutions.

He said the recent water sustainability assessment, shows that Uganda needs 55 billion cubic meters to meet her water demands by 2030, but only has 37 billion.
