The man was taken to Mbale Central Police Station for safe custody

Gunshots on Tuesday rocked Mbale town as Police rescued a suspected thief from a mob.

The incident occurred at Indian Quarters along Bugweri Road at around midday.

Samuel Nabongho the officer-in-charge (OC) at Maluku Police Post did not identify the particulars of the suspect by press time.

He however narrated that the man who was suspected to have stolen a motorcycle was beaten up before he sought refuge inside Hotel Palm where Police rescued him.

According to Nabongho, Police fired in the air to disperse the mob that attempted to break into the hotel in pursuit of the suspect.

A Police patrol car immediately arrived at the hotel and took them to Mbale Central Police Station for safe custody as investigations onto the matter got underway.

"Although he is bleeding seriously we managed to pick him from the hotel and we are taking him to CPS for interrogation" Nabongho said.

This is not the first time gunshots have rocked Mbale town this week.

On Sunday evening, Police again fired bullets to disperse a mob that wanted to lynch another suspected thief.
