Namakula takes five-stroke lead in Ladies Open

Oct 15, 2016

It wasn't bad today but I still struggled with my putting though my swing worked out better than yesterday.

Uganda Ladies Open defending champion Flavia Namakula shot a second round, one-over-par 73 to surge to the top of the leader board as the Castle Lite Uganda Open entered day-two.

Namakula is now five strokes ahead of day-one leader Irene Nakalembe who had a torrid time on the front nine.

Namakula who is gunning for a third consecutive title in three years got four birdies en-route to taking over from Nakalembe.

"It wasn't bad today but I still struggled with my putting though my swing worked out better than yesterday. I have to improve on my putting going into the last round and I have to remain patient and control the pressure," Namakula said after winning the longest drive competition at the 18th fairway as well.

Irene Nakalembe's woes started on the par-4 hole No.8 which she triple-bogeyed, having landed her tee shot in the bunker that sits in the middle of the fairway towards the green; where she got out for four.

She added on bogeys on holes; 9, 14, 15 and 18 to lose her lead to the defending champion whose drives were spot on, on the day.

19 year old Kenyan Agnes Nyakio who lies third is now also playing on familiar ground and hopes to improve despite having double-bogeyed hole 18.

"The course is fine and I hope to play better in the final round," Nyakio said.
Tanzania's Iddi Madina is eight strokes away in fourth in what is a four-horse race.
