Prevention and control of HIV should be a general duty of the community

Soroti TASO clients have been urged to develop morale of disclosing their HIV status to the community in a bid to reduce HIV prevalence in Teso.

This follows claims that some people ignorantly contract the virus because they are not aware of their partner's status.

Jacob Denis Olweny, the TASO clinical services supervisor in Soroti district said some people fear to test for HIV but if positive people accept to disclose their status, the community will be aware and be sceptical of contracting the virus.

According to Olweny, many of the individuals contract HIV because of ignorance, he added that the prevention and control of HIV should be a general duty of the community.

He urged individuals to test for HIV before indulging in sexual affairs in order to curtail the HIV spread rate.

However the manager of TASO-Soroti further cautioned that individuals ought to disclose their status in order to make the community aware of the right way to treat the HIV positive clients in the community.

According to her, HIV clients require gentle care in the society in order to prolong their life.

The clients' chairperson TASO-Soroti, Charles Ekinyang said that some clients have ignored advice to take care of themselves and ended up over drinking.

He urged clients to take drugs and follow advice given by the counsellors.
