KCCA revamps 'Keep Kampala Clean' campaign

As one of the ways to better manage garbage disposal and improve hygiene in the city, Kampala Capital City Authority has revamped its ‘Keep Kampala Clean' campaign.

While launching the community service in Ndeeba in Rubaga division, KCCA's director of public health David Sserugo said the mass cleaning exercises will be carried out in all divisions every last Friday of the month.

"We are aiming at reducing rubbish in the city which is still in plenty. When we focus on being clean, the high numbers of people that spend money in hospitals will reduce," he said.

Sserugo urged people to clean up their areas especially in drainages to avoid floods that occur in the city due to blocked drainage channels.

Sserugo also called on community leaders to encourage residents not to litter anyhow and also to plant trees. He said KCCA has a target of having 500,000 trees planted in the city before 2020.

Rubaga division mayor Joyce Ssebugwawo said rubbish is one of the problems affecting the city, saying it is high time people started collecting it for reprocessing to get other valuables like crafts for sell.

Eliab Kyagoba, a local council leader in Ndeeba, hailed KCCA and residents for cleaning up their area.

In the same spirit, he appealed to KCCA to always work with residents in all they are doing as it was with the ‘Keep Kampala Clean' campaign to enable smooth running of the work in the city.

Residents worked together with KCCA officials and swept streets in the area, cleaned up drainage channels, emptied latrines and sprayed insects.
