Residents of Kavule village in Makerere, have cleaned up their area which had got characterized by stench from the rotting waste dumped in drainage channels and heaps of waste on the road sides.

The move is intended to improve the sanitation and hygiene conditions of the area, and also improve the health conditions of the area.

Residents claim the drainage channels in the area had been blocked, thus leading to flooding every time it rains.

"People had turned trenches into dumping points for plastic bottles and all kinds of waste. This had led to a strange smell in the area that was making residents uncomfortable. The channel had also got filled with silt and we needed to unblock it," Moses Kilwana, a resident and a third year Makerere University student noted.

However, they attributed of poor hygiene of non-residents who just dump waste anywhere.

"We have our collecting point where garbage collectors from Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) pick it," Abdul Semuwemba, a resident explained.
