“We don’t know what exactly happened."

Hundreds of students of Welden College Mbarara have been sent back home after a mysterious fire gutted on the school dormitories.

At the time of the Sunday evening fire, some students were watching a football in the main hall while others were attending preps.

The school's director Elias Ssempa said by the time police fire fighters were called in, a lot of damage had been done.

The facility was housing 320 students, including Senior Four and Senior Six members. Books and personal belonging were lost in the inferno whose cause is still unknown.

It is said the fire started shortly after a power outage.

Fire fighters prevented the fire from spreading to other dormitories. School director Ssempa said the students would be called back after the school's board of directors have sat.

"We don't know what exactly happened. We just saw the dormitory burning. It's very unfortunate because many of us lost our property and we kindly ask well-wishers to come and help us," said Acram Hakim, a Senior Five student.

Sande George, a parent from Nyamarungi village, urged for combined effort of security organizations to find out the cause of fire in schools which he said had left many parents in tears after their children losing property.
