An expert on children has urged the International Criminal Court (ICC) to intervene and end the South Sudan conflict which has left many dead while others have been forced out of their homes.

Jane Ekayu, the executive director of Children of Peace an NGO based in Lira said the conflict in South Sudan has left thousands of children in a state of total despair, lacking food, shelter and proper medical care.

‟We call upon the ICC to work with the African Union and the United Nations to bring lasting peace to the world's youngest country. An international peace keeping mission will help prevent loss of innocent lives in the South Sudan, ″ she said on Tuesday.

Ekayu, who recently represented Uganda at The Hague during an ICC expert consultation on child policy, said international community should put more focus on prevention of wars adding that this would prevent the suffering of many people.

She urged Uganda to support the ICC child policy which will be launched on November 16th during the 15th session of assembly of state parties.

″The purpose of the policy is to end impunity for atrocities and crimes against and affecting children including children in conflict,″ she said.
