The officer said he was forced to shoot the suspect in the foot after he made two attempts to hack him with an axe

A Sunday morning Police operation in Nakaseke to arrest nine suspects, ended in bloodshed when an officer shot at one of the suspects wounding him in the foot.

This was after the suspect, only identified as Fred, confronted the Police officer with an axe.

The Savannah Regional police Commander, Julius Tusingwire said the incident took place at around 3.30am on Sunday morning at Kyamutakasa village in Nakaseke sub-county in Nakaseke South Constituency.

Fred is a resident of Kyamutakasa village and the policeman who shot him was identified as Dick Turyatemba the OC of Nakaseke Police Station.

Tusingwire said a team of 20 policemen led by the Turyatemba had been deployed to arrest a group of nine suspects said to have been on the run after last week's incident in which they allegedly demolished a resident's home at Kyamutakasa village.

He said Turyatemba was by Monday being investigated to establish what went wrong, while his gun was being kept at the Savannah Regional Police headquarters in Luweero.

When contacted by phone on Monday, Turyatemba said he was forced to shoot the suspect in the foot after he made two attempts to hack him with an axe.

"He almost finished me off if I had not moved very fast," Turyatemba said.

A mob last week demolished two homes at Kyamutakasa village in Nakaseke accusing the owner of practicing witchcraft.

During the operation, Police managed to arrest a total of nine suspects, including the wounded one.
