At least 134 district health managers are undergoing a nine months training in governance, Leadership and management.

This is aimed at improving health service delivery through improved leadership and management.

The health heads are being trained by Makerere University School of public health (MakSPH) in conjunction with the ministry of health, with support from the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

The training manager MakSPH Joseph Matovu said, the fellowship was developed as a result of the challenges they noted in service delivery at district and regional level after an assessment.

Speaking during a meeting at Golf Course hotel Matovu said, "we realised that governance, Leadership and management were critical challenges in health service delivery and we thought by addressing these three aspects, we would improve service delivery at district and regional levels,"

The fellowship started last year and so far twenty two fellows have completed the training.

"As part of the training, trainees were meant to identify and implement a hands-on project to demonstrate acquisition of skills. The trainings are conducted at regional level and last for nine months," he revealed.

The district health officer Kiruhura district, Dr. Ivan Kamya who participated in the training said, they have used the skills to increase the number of mothers delivering from health centre 1Vs.

"we have made sure that more doctors and midwives are posted to these facilities," he said.

The overall objective of the project was to increase the proportion of mothers who deliver at health facilities in Kiruhura from 38 % deliveries per month to 42% by end of June.
