Farming has helped us bond

Much as they had different interests, they had to agree on doing certain things as a couple in order for their dreams to come true.

After their wedding in 2012, Tony Lubuurwa and Noreen Muwanguzi realized that they had to join hands to develop themselves.

Much as they had different interests, they had to agree on doing certain things as a couple in order for  their dreams to come true.

Muwanguzi had a job at the Uganda cancer Institute while Lubuurwa was a sales person in Stanchartered bank. However Lubuurwa had interest in farming which he wanted to venture into.

Together with his wife, they agreed to venture into farming and they decided that they would support each other.Today they are one of the greatest farmers in Gomba

How they started.

Lubuurwa had land in Gomba so they started with that piece of land. "During that time, tomatoes were on high demand and who ever had tomatoes earned from them, "says Lubuurwa.

Using their savings, they visited an expert to get ideas on how tomato farming is done and what is required.

"We started by planting tomatoes so as to earn from them. The process was long but since we were determined, we did all that was required and we surely earned from them, "he explains.

He says the process involved buying tomato seeds, preparing a nursery bed and after transferring them to an already prepared garden where they require close monitoring, manure application to the soil and constant spraying to get good yields.

At the end of it all, the results were really good that the couple continued with tomato planting.

However, they never stopped at that. Today they have ventured into piggery farming and also cabbage farming which has greatly improved on their earning.

Muwanguzi says for a farmer to earn from farming, one has to invest in land and also employ other people to help in monitoring the way things are moving.

She says piggery is a good venture but requires a lot of investment for the pigs to do well so as to get good returns.

"The house must be big enough for the pigs to enjoy themselves coupled with feeding them well," she says.

She explains that it's important to spray the piggery area and also control access to the place to avoid spread of diseases like swine flu.

She adds that when pigs are about to give birth they should be isolated and given maximum attention to prevent making losses during delivery time.

"Some pigs are wild and tend to eat piglets during delivery so if the farmer is not careful, he can make losses, "she says.

Achievements

"Farming has helped us bond and learn to work with each other, "says Lubuurwa.

She adds that they have acquired property in Kampala and hope to grow more.
