Police together with other intelligence agencies have managed to recover three stolen vehicles in the West Nile region.

Other agencies include Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) and Internal Security Organization (ISO).

This follows an operation code named; "Shika Wajinga" literally meaning 'arrest the stupid people' which kicked off on Saturday.

Speaking to New Vision in a phone interview, the area Regional Police Commandant, Ibrahim Saiga said the vehicles were recovered from Vurra and Dramachaku near the Uganda and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

"They are all new vehicles and we think the suspects were smuggling them to DRC. But through our intelligence, we managed to get them," he noted.

The cars which were recovered include a Toyota Premio reg no. UAY 456D, Toyota Noah reg no. UAY 974C and a pickup truck reg no. UAY 045X.

The also managed to arrest five suspects who are helping with the investigations.

"This operation started last week with an aim of curtailing car robberies which have been rampant. We want to burst the whole racket. It is good we have five of the suspects. They are going to help us get others who are still at large," Saiga said.

He declined to reveal their identities, saying that it might jeopardize their investigations, since other accomplices were still at large.

According to Saiga, the suspects confessed to have stolen the vehicles from Kampala.

Saiga revealed that the Toyota Noah was stolen from Kisekka Market and belongs to one Rogers Kaweesi. Other cars were stolen from Makindye and Rubaga but owners have not yet been known.

This comes after police published a list of vehicles suspected to have been smuggled to Congo.

Saiga said they are committed to arresting those involved if they don't get saved and quit.
