FIFA set to meet gov't over FUFA

Jul 03, 2016

FUFA has been cagey to register under public trusteeship, arguing it contradicts FIFA requirements.

A delegation of yet-to-be named FIFA officials have accepted to meet the Uganda government over National Council of Sports (NCS) demands for FUFA to register under the Trusteeship Act.

They are expected on July 12.

In a response to NCS' grace period of up to July 16 for non-compliant federations and associations to complete the process, FUFA noted: "FIFA has confirmed to FUFA that they will come to Uganda for a meeting on July, 12 2016 with Minister of State for Sports Charles Bakkabulindi".

FUFA has been cagey to register under public trusteeship, arguing that it contradicts FIFA requirements and can attract their ban from international football.

But on the deadline of the exercise on June 30, NCS General Secretary Nicholas Muramagi stated: "We (NCS) shall permit for a window grace period lasting up to July 16, 2016 in which period we expect the engagement with the FIFA delegation to have concluded and a definite way forward determined".

Muramagi said in his letter to FUFA that the meeting will guide them over the registration of FUFA under the Trusteeship Act.

Although FUFA has met requirements of the new government guidelines on national sports federations/associations, Mengo is concerned the Trusteeship Act contravenes FIFA statutes.

Another national association benefiting from the window is Uganda Cricket Association (UCA), which will now meet and pick their trustees at an AGM on Wednesday.

NCS expects officials to meet over rowing, wrestling, judo, fencing, canoeing and kayaking, squash, omweso, gymnastics associations, and dragon boat federation that did not either initiate the registration process or abandoned it had been locked out.

But the basketball, hockey, ludo, freesbe, lacrosse and the darts associations as well as Uganda Gold Union are the associations which are only waiting for the new minister of lands Betty Amongi to endorse their certificates.
