Best farmers 2015: Meet Corporal Alfred Okiring

Okiring`s family is involved in all farming activities and this ensures continuity.

He served in the Uganda Peoples' Defence Force before he retired and became a farmer.

The 54-year old farmer of Kachede Village, Malera Sub County in Bukedea district has a range of enterprises including Sunflower on 5 acres, Citrus with 1,155 trees, Apiary with 50 beehives, 20 colonized, beans and soya on 2 acres.

He also does vegetable oil processing. To do this work, he employs 2 permanent, 10 casual workers.

Okiring`s family is involved in all farming activities and this ensures continuity.

Irrigation on the farm has ensured all year production which is big plus for Okiring. With this he is able to sustain production and his income as well.

His farm is well organized and home hygiene is good. He processes vegetable oil from the sunflower that he grows and sells this as cooking oil within the village.

Agronomic practices such as water conservation through construction of valleys and ridges, intercropping & mulching. Records of the farm are well maintained to track performance.
