MPs approve Janet Museveni education minister

Janet explained that she is easily approachable and that when she was minister for Karamoja affairs, people from the area could easily approach her.

Parliament Appointments committee on Tuesday approved several new ministers including First Lady Janet Museveni as education minister and Kirunda Kivejinja as second deputy Prime Minister.Other ministers approved included Vincent Bamulangaki Ssempijja (agriculture), Amelia Kyambadde (trade), Muruli Mukasa (public service) among others.

Each political party is represented on the Appointments committee chaired by Speaker Rebecca Kadaga. The Leader of Opposition in Parliament Winnie Kiiza is also a member.

The First deputy Premier Gen. Moses Ali, who was supposed to be among the first to be vetted, did not turn up. There are reports that he is bedridden.

Buhweju county MP Francis Mwijukye asked Janet Museveni how she could be accessed as a minister for a very strategic ministry yet she is always surrounded by soldiers.

Janet explained that she is easily approachable and that when she was minister for Karamoja affairs, people from the area could easily approach her.

Joseph Ssewungu also gave hard time to Kivejinja on whether he could deliver as expected given his advanced age.

Asked by journalists when he plans to retire from politics, the 81-year-old politician said, "I am not willing to quit active politics because no one brought me into politics. Even in my death, my spirit will influence the young people to continue with the revolution."

Talking to New Vision regarding his plan for the corruption in the public service, Muruli Mukasa said, "I will fight corruption in the public service. We shall initiate measures to ensure corruption plans are nipped in the bud before they succeed so that public funds are not stolen and tough punitive measures will be applied to those who will be caught in corruption."

Bamulangaki Ssempijja promised to revolutionize agriculture putting more efforts into ensuring that majority farmers become commercial farmers to improve the household incomes of Ugandans.
