Kitutu promises investment in the environment sector

Dr. Goretti Kitutu appointed State Minister for Environment is no stranger to the problems plaguing the environment and natural resources management.

Kitutu has previously worked as the ‎Environment Information System Specialist at National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) and USAID in Kampala.

She said her agenda in office is to increase the budget for natural resources management.

"We avoid investing in the environment sector and ending up paying heavily," Kitutu told New Vision in an interview.

Apart from influencing the budget allocation, Kitutu said she would also put a lot of attention on the gender issues affecting women. 

She said the women were disadvantaged yet they are pillars of development among grassroot communities.

Who is Kitutu?

Kitutu who is the woman MP for Manafwa obtained her doctorate degree from Makerere University.

This is her first term in Parliament and is likely to provide a wealth of experience and knowledge regarding the environment.

Prior to her doctorate and during her studies at Makerere she undertook extensive research on the landslide prone Mt. Elgon in eastern Uganda. Manafwa is one of the districts sitting on the slopes of Mt. Elgon. 

She has also co-authored a number of publications including the bi-annual state of environment report, the sensitivity atlas for the Albertine Grabben and the mountains atlas.
