During this period, Muslims are not supposed to eat, drink or engage in sexual activity from dawn until sunset.

President Yoweri Museveni has wished Muslims a happy holy month of Ramadhan as they start fasting today.

"As our Muslim brothers and sisters embark on Ramadhan, may Allah's blessings rest on them and their wishes and prayers come to fruition.  I would like to wish the entire Muslim community a month of joy, clemency and blessings.  Ramadhan Kareem!" Museveni said.

In a separate message, Deborah Malac, the Ambassador of US to Uganda, has implored Muslims to use the holy month of Ramadhan to reflect and renew their faith.

Wishing Muslims a joyful holy month of Ramadhan, Malac said: "Ramadan is the festive month during which Muslims around the globe reflect on and renew their faith. Muslims honour each day of Ramadan as a day of patient endurance through fasting, and each night as a night of gratitude through prayers. Ramadan is also a month of giving, as Muslims reach out to assist those afflicted by hunger, poverty, and disease."

"In the United States, Muslims join their fellow citizens to serve the less fortunate, hosting inter-faith activities that promote tolerance and build understanding among religious communities. As an expression of appreciation for the efforts and contributions of Muslims in America and beyond, President Obama hosts an annual iftar dinner at the White House," she added.

Sheik Ibrahim Kakungulu, the director of sharia at the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) on Sunday announced the beginning of fasting for all Muslims in the country. During this period, Muslims are not supposed to eat, drink or engage in sexual activity from dawn until sunset.
