About Mityana diocese

As hundreds of Christians gathered at Namugongo  to pay pilgrimage to the Uganda martyrs, Kiyinda Mityana diocese led the celebrations at the catholic shrine.

This is briefly the profile of the diocese. The diocese was started in 1981, breaking from Kampala metropolitan diocese.

Cardinal Emmanuel Wamala was the first bishop of this diocese from 1981 to 1988 (17-07-1981 to 21-06-1988). Bishop Wamala was replaced by Bishop joseph Mukwaya who served from 1988 to 2004 ( 21-6-1988  to 23-10-2004. Bishop Mukwaya died shortly after retirement and was buried in the St Noah's chapel, near the diocesan cathedral. Bishop Joseph Antony Zziwa served from 2004 up to date.  Bishop Zziwa holds a doctorate in philosophy and Theology and is the vice chairman of the Uganda episcopal conference. Bishop Zziwa surprised the contrgetaion when he spoke Luganda, English and Swahili. He however understands most of the local languages in Uganda and germany and also knows latin.

At Namugongo, Bishop Zziwa was accompanied by a number of priests led by Fr Agustine Lukenge, who served as the comentator during the mass. Though he has trained and served in Uganda, Fr Lukenge also knows a number of languages like French. The diocese presented a mass choir combining of members from all the different parishes. This choir was led by Fr Godfrey Sseguja, of this diocese.

Fr Sseguja studied music in all his seminary life and has practiced it for long. In this choir were also three other priests who especially were playing music instruments. The success of the diocesan choir is based on the training of Fr Dr James Kabuye, of this diocese.  Fr Kabuye holds a doctorate in music and has trained my musicians in the Catholic Church. At Kiyinda were four of the Uganda martys. Noah Mawagali, Luka Baanabakintu, Matia Mulumba and Ambrozio Kibuuka. Noa , Matia and Luka lived at Kiyinda, at a place where the cathedral was built. Noah was killed there on 31^st. Ambrozio was born at Ttamu near Mityana town and Matia was born at Butega near Mityana town.
