KAMPALA - A joint operation involving the police and crime preventers saw 42 suspected hooligans arrested in downtown Kampala.

They are reported to be involved in terrorizing the city centre.

The suspects were picked from the Old Taxi Park, Ben Kiwanuka street, Mini Price, Kikuubo and Nakivubo Channel.

Kampala metropolitan police spokesperson Patrick Onyango told reporters at the Centrel Police Station that the operation was done especially on street lads who mostly rob traders and pedestrians in the morning and evening hours.

"The police is always on alert," he said.

"Many traders have been complaining about these street kids and that's why we decided to conduct such operations. We arrested 42 and we are going to produce them in court before the end of this week."

According to Onyango, many of these boys were intercepted from the Nakivubo Channel as they tried to evade arrest.

The police spokesperson said the channel is becoming a hazardous place where many hooligans hide when the police is hunting them.

Such police operations are still going on in many crime-plagued places in Kampala.
