Northern Uganda registered a poor human rights record

The Human Rights officer Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) in Arua, Juliet Logose, has appealed to cultural leaders to respect human rights and the laws that govern the nation.

She was speaking at a joint training of cultural leaders on prohibition and prevention of torture at the Golden Courts Hotel in Arua on Thursday.

The training which ends Friday is organized by UN Human Rights Council and Uganda Human Rights Commission.

According to the 2014-15 annual report on Human Rights compiled by Uganda Human Rights Commission presented before parliament, Northern Uganda registered a poor human rights record with torture as the top most crime perpetuated by both cultural and state institutions.

She said cultural leaders ought to refrain from doing certain things that stop their subjects from enjoying their rights.

The Human Rights Officer UN- Human Rights, Howard Ayo, said cultural leaders should understand the laws of Uganda so that they disseminate them to the communities.
