Kampala Baptist church clocks 30 years

The weeklong celebrations for the 30th anniversary of Kampala Baptist Church climaxed with a thanksgiving ceremony at the Church in Nakulabye, Rubaga Division, on Sunday.

Prior activities included envisioning breakfast at the church, worship night, youth expo, children's bash and, a thanksgiving dinner at Hotel Africana.

Dr. Michael Okwakol, who preached during the Sunday thanksgiving service, asked the Kampala Baptist Church Christians to worship God and serve him with even greater joy than ever.

Monica Chibita, who preached at the dinner, cautioned Christians against some preachers who misinterpreted the scriptures to suit their desires.  Chibita later asked the Christians to treasure and read the word of God every day. "If the word of God is to influence our world view, we need to read it daily, not only on Sunday."

The Senior Pastor of Kampala Baptist Church, Andrew Mwenge announced the Church's plans to purchase a modern machine to print Bible materials.

The celebrations ran under the theme: God's faithfulness (1sam7:12 -9).

History of the Baptist Church in Uganda

The Baptist faith, according to Pastor Mwenge, came to Uganda in 1964. It was introduced by two groups of missionaries; the Conservative Baptist Missionaries from Congo, and the Southern Baptist Missionaries from the US, who spread the faith in Jinja, Iganga, Mbale and Soroti.

Baptist Christians originally congregated at places like KCC Hall, Blue Room, National Theatre and St. John's Ambulance on Buganda Road. The Baptist Church nonetheless went underground during Amin's misrule in the 70s. But the faith was restarted in Nakulabye, in 1986.

The Baptist Church observes a congregational form of governance, where authority is with the congregation. It also emphasizes the authority of scripture and priesthood of all believers; everybody has access to God.
