FDC torn between boycott and appointing Leader of Opposition

May 13, 2016

We shall announce whether to appoint the Leader of Opposition or not - Ibrahim Semujju,

Uganda's leading Opposition party, the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) is expected next week to appoint the next Leader of Opposition in Parliament (LOP).

The party has up to May 18 to appoint the Leader of Opposition, after the swearing-in of Members of Parliament. And the new LOP will then appoint his shadow cabinet and parliamentary committee leaders.

The party has to replace Wafula Oguttu, the outgoing LOP, who failed to retain his Bukhooli Central parliamentary seat during the February elections.

However, for the last three months, the party has been locked in a political impasse on whether it should form a shadow cabinet or not, after it disputed the February 18 presidential polls.

Saturday Vision has learnt that the party's flag-bearer, Dr Kizza Besigye, proposed that FDC snubs the seats in Parliament in order not to give legitimacy to the elections, which the party disputes.
