Her bump no longer showed yet colleagues had no knowledge she had given birth
A student of Uganda College of Commerce (UCC) Soroti has been arrested after dumping a feotus of a baby girl into a pit latrine.
Students who have been staying with Jessica Irongu, 23, a second year Accounting Finance student, said they noticed on Sunday evening that her bump no longer showed yet they had no knowledge she had given birth.
The students resided in Asinge Cell, Madera ward, Northern Division in Soroti Municipality.
"She has been pregnant but we realized that the pregnancy wasn't showing over the weekend. When we asked her, she hated us," Loyce Apong said.
According to students, Irongu had told them that her mother had been forcing her to get married to an old man who had gotten her pregnant.
The landlord who was tipped off by students reported the matter to police who rushed to his home and discovered the feotus wrapped in a black Kevera inside the latrine.
The police took about an hour to recover the feotus of a girl.
Bruno Bongonyinge, the deputy OC CID Soroti Central Police station said Irongu is now in their custody pending further investigations.
"She will be charged with abortion," said Bongonyinge.
Irongu told New Vision in police that it was someone whom she did not disclose the name who convinced her to go to the doctor to abort.
"Though I was not willing to abort but again I was not also ready for a baby at this time," she said while crying.
