Crocodile devouring pupils of Apac school

The Apac Anti-Corruption Corruption (TAACC) has documented the six killings, and several animals eaten by crocodiles in the last three years.

There is growing concern following killings of pupils of Chakali P.7 School in Tarogali parish, Ibuje sub county, Apac district by crocodiles believed to have devoured at least six in the last three years.

TAACC Executive Director Tom Opwonya said they have also documented five people in the same are who survived with injuries in the same period of time.

Those believed dead, according to TAACC include: Katale, 7 years P.1, Otim Alex, 12, P.3, Adupa Ivan, 15,  P.5,  Okao Denis, 14, P.4, Nyakirya Jeska, 8, P.1, all pupils of Chakali P.7 school and Ocen Dauglas, 13, P.5, a student of Igoti Annex Primary School.

Those injured include, Okello Alex, 32, Ajok Sharon, 20,  Ogolo Jimmy, 17,  Adongo Jacky, 25 and  Olila Vincent,30.

Most of the wounded sustained injures on the arms, hands and ribs. Opwonya said unspecified number of cows have also been caught by the crocodiles.

The crocodiles, Opwonya said, make their way out of the National Park to the stretch of River Nile where the locals fetch water for domestic use and water their animals.

Opwonya said TAACC  gets complaints directly from the general public and listens to the concerns raised through the local FM radio stations and the 216 trained Independent Budget Monitors.

TAACC is organizing a public dialogue at Tarogali Trading Centre on Friday aimed at providing a lasting solution to the suffering of the people.

"TAACC believes that there is need to dialogue and educate the public to get lasting solutions to the problem, given the number of victims so far now eaten," Opwonya said.

Apac police said there has been the menace but wondered if its only one crocodile or they are many.

Ojasngole said they have got report of crocodiles killing several people and wounding others. He said they will be attending the public dialogue to brainstorm in order to get a lasting solution on Friday.

TAACC said there has been over whelming calls on Uganda Wildlife Authority and leaders of Apac district by the residents of Tarogali parish in Ibuje Sub County to help them address the threats posed by the crocodiles to the lives of the children and animals of the area.
