An eyewitness said that the vehicle was moving at a high speed when it over turned

Two people were confirmed dead after a trailer heading to Kigali in Rwanda from Kenya overturned at Nkumbura along Mbarara-Kabale Road.

Kigezi regional police spokesman Elly Matte said that trailer registration number RAB 159L/RL0879 lost control and overturned several times and the two occupants died on spot.

"We have not identified the two dead occupants but the vehicle was Rwanda registered and was on its way to Kigali" Matte said.

He attributed the accident to over speeding and the trailer being in dangerous mechanical condition.

"It seems the driver lost control after the trailer failed to apply brakes and ended up overturning," Matte said.

An eyewitness Tugume Michael said that the vehicle was moving at a high speed when it over turned.

Matte however condemned the locals who rushed to the scene to loot the materials the truck was carrying and said that the police would follow them and arrest whoever is found with the contraband.

He said that the case has been registered as TAR 56/2016 and the bodies of the deceased have been taken to Kabale Regional Hospital mortuary awaiting relatives from Rwanda to identify them and take them for burial.

The accident is the fourth fatal case along the same stretch of the road in less than a month according to police records.
