James Saaka, NITA-U chief says the two phases covering over 28 towns has enabled government to purchase data in bulk which has reduced the overall costs.

The completion of phase one and two of the national backbone infrastructure (NBI) is saving government $3m (sh10.2b) annually, money previously spent in buying internet data, the IT authority has said.

James Saaka, NITA-U chief says the two phases covering over 28 towns has enabled government to purchase data in bulk which has reduced the overall costs.

"That is when it makes meaning to our citizens to go online, when costs are down," noted Saaka at a sensitization workshop for Mbarara district leadership.

He said cost of bandwidth has come down from $1,000 a few years ago to $300 per megabits per second today.

The third and final phase of the $100m project is set to be launched in a few months with part focus on connecting to an alternative route through Mutukula to Tanzania.
