Motivate health trainers to produce more competent staff - Okurut

Minister for Security Karooro Okurut has tipped health institutions to prioritize motivating health trainers to produce more professional staff.

The Minister said as the country raises more Nurses and Midwifery, emphasis should be on producing competent staff to improve the quality of human resource in the health sector.

She was officiating (today) during the 7th graduation ceremony of Mulago School of Nurses and Midwifery at Mulago, Kampala.

The School also celebrated 60 years of existence since inception and a total of 210 students graduated.

The Mulago graduation witnessed 58 students graduate as Midwives and 152 as Nurses.

"As we celebrate our daughters' and sons' success today, let this be an opportunity to appraise government programmes and strive to improve the quality of the health human resource collectively," said Okurut

Okurut was pleased that Mulago School of Nursing and Midwifery will soon upgrade to offer programmes like diploma in palliative care, oncology, and critical care Nursing among others.

She encouraged the School of Nursing to strengthen collaboration with Mulago Hospital to yield better health service delivery in the country.

Okurut hailed the school for launching the 2016-2021 strategic plans as it will help improve the physical infrastructure of the school and also promote innovative curriculum.

She pledged government's commitment to transform the physical infrastructure of health training institutions to meet the health needs of Ugandans.

Minister of Education, Science and Technology Jessica Alupo, advised the students to be relevant and positively impact on lives of Ugandans.

Alupo observed that health training has now been expanded to offer more specialized training of health practitioners.

"Government has invested shs 1.7bn in Mulago on infrastructural development to better aid learning of health concepts. We will strive to produce more training equipment and also supervise curriculum to remain relevant in offering better service delivery to Ugandans," clarified Alupo

She encouraged training institutions to deploy qualified tutors to produce more competent health workers.

Alupo also pledged government's plan to revamp the physical infrastructure of the school on top of procuring 1 bus to help curb the transport challenges.

Safina Musene, Principal at Mulago School of Nurses and Midwifery told graduands to prepare to fill existing gaps in the human health resource and act more professionally.

Musene observed that since ministry of education as approached the institution to start a diploma in palliative care, the institution will take up the mantle and position self in producing palliative care health workers.
