UPDF officer kills seven in Kanungu shootout

Seven people were killed on Thursday night after a soldier attached to Mburamaizi Barracks in Kihihi town, Kanungu district opened fire on them. 

According to the army spokesperson Kigezi region Lt. Fidel Mashumbuko, Lance Corporal  Moses Kyatoka killed two soldiers including his wife and five civilians and injuring an unknown number of civilians. 

Kyatoka has been working as a nurse at the barracks and he developed a misunderstanding with his wife who is also a soldier. He killed her and another soldier who tried to intervene. 

Most of the civilians who were killed were at the trading center. 

Army spokesperson Paddy Ankunda confirmed Katooko was under police detention.  

"He handed himself to the police and is under detention at Kihihi Police Station. Investigations with a view to prosecution are underway," Ankunda said.
