Parents urged to develop their children's talents

The director of education in Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), Juliet Namuddu, has urged parents to encourage their children to develop their talent by allowing them participate in school co-curricular activities.

She made the remarks during the music, dance and drama competitions at Mackay College, Nateete, last Friday.

Students from six houses including Kabalega, Lumumba, Muteesa, Mandela, Senteza and Ssekabila competed in activities such as performing traditional folk songs, original compositions, poems, western choral singing, traditional dances and drama, among others.

 

The event was organised under theme, 'Uplifting Vocational skills to combat unemployment'.

Addressing parents, students and staff at the school, Namuddu who was the guest-of-honour, said many Ugandans have ridden on their talent to become successful.

"Many people in the world today are successful and have been famous because of their talent. It is important for you to support the children, promote them as they may be on their ways to success," Namuddu said.

She lauded the staff of the school for equipping the pupils with vocational skills as well as helping develop their talents.

She pledged KCCA's continued support for the school's development programmes to enable students attain a good education.

The school's head teacher Dr Francis Kayanja said teachers are facing a challenge of students' poor attitude to MDD, claiming those activities are only for those who have failed at academics.

He thanked his school staff for investing in the MDD days to ensure that the events are always colourful.

Muteesa house won the competitions, walking away with a trophy.

The best pupils in the different categories were also awarded.
