Indian High Commission vows to develop tourism in Kampala

The Indian High Commissioner to Uganda, Ramesh Chandra has pleaded his continued support towards projects managed by Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) aimed at developing tourism.

Chandra said that Indian's community partnership with KCCA comes along way citing the KCCA schools which the India community has supported.  He said that "We shall continue working in partnership with KCCA in promoting others sectors like we have done in some of the KCCA schools," Chandra said at the handover of Miss Kampala vehicle at the KCCA head office in Kampala.

The Miss Kampala Contest was organized by Silk Events, KCCA and Fashion Society of Uganda with the aim of promoting Kampala fashion and the modeling industry.

The KCCA executive director Jennifer Musisi in her remarks applauded the India community for promoting the city and making it a desirable place.

"We appreciate you for having promoted Uganda and Kampala in particular. We have made progress in the last five years and we shall continue doing so," Musisi said.

The Vice President of the Fashion Society Sudeep Mohanty said that contest was organized last year and with the aim of promoting Kampala city and also to recognize it through one of its core components of beauty.

The authority spokesperson Peter Kaujju told the New Vision that KCCA has realized that many tourists pass through Kampala and proceed to other areas to tour yet Kampala has tourist sites too.

"Many tourists just go through Kampala and proceed to other tourist sites elsewhere in the country. Kampala has historical tourists' sites worth visiting," Kaujju said.

He added that Grace Gashumba Kampala's ambassador will improve the tourism sector as she will spread information about the cities' sites not only to people of Uganda but also to the rest of the world.

He further revealed that the authority has plans of introducing friendly environment by introducing city buses for tourists, tour guides and promoting hotels and resorts in the city.

The 2015-2016 miss Kampala vowed to improve the status of tourism in Kampala adding that she will first sensitize students in schools about it for them to also tell other people.

Gashumba added she will also prioritize promoting a girl child and her rights adding that she will carry out sensitization in communities especially schools to educate people about rights of a girl child.
