DIRECTOR UGANDA VIRUS RESEARCH INSTITUTE

The Uganda National Health Research Organization (UNHRO) established by an Act of Parliament of 2011. UNHRO is a semi-autonomous Agency, whose mandate is to coordinate health research in Uganda, among other functions. Its mission is to create scientific knowledge for the application of evidence based health policies and interventions for the improvement of health care delivery and socioeconomic development for the people of Uganda.

The Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) is one of the institutions under the management of UNHRO. The Institute engages in health research pertaining to human infections and disease processes associated with or linked to viral etiology and other health research aspects.

Multidisciplinary collaboration and engagement of other partners is one of the tasks envisaged. UVRI is headed by the Director who is the Chief Executive of the Institute. In line with this, applications are invited for the post of Director to head and manage the Institute. The job profile and competence is detailed below.

Reporting to: Director General of UNHRO

Summary of the post job description

  • • The Director is the overall supervisor and Accounting Officer;
  • • Provide quality scientific leadership and appropriate research guidance in the institute;
  • • Manage budgets for the institutes;
  • • Plan and prepare departmental budgets and obtain their approval from the UNHRO Board;
  • • Manage, organize and protect the assets of the Institute including land, infrastructure and logistics;
  • • Coordinate human resource management and training programmes;
  • • Chairperson of the Management Committee of the Institute;
  • • Handle the overall supervision of the Institute's' collaborative programmes and projects;
  • • Maintain a culture of accountability, transparency and ethics;
  • • Prepare and provide periodic, annual and other relevant reports about the Institute to UNHRO and related stakeholders;
  • • Maintain an accessible library including the archives and publications.

Communicate with internal and external stakeholders and be the spokesperson of the Institute;

  • • Undertake any other duties as may be assigned by the Director General of UNHRO.

Qualifications

  • • A PhD or its equivalent in the Medical Field, Humanities orBiological Sciences from a recorganized Institution;
  • • At least thirty (30) publications in peer reviewed journals, fifteen (15) of these publications as the first or senior (last) author;
  • • Fifteen (15) years of experience in active research;

Experience: Other requirements

  • • Must have a track record of attracting funding and grants;
  • • Evidence of leading a research team(s);
  • • Excellent written and verbal skills and ability to prepare and present papers to a wider range of audience;
  • • Good interpersonal and communication skills;
  • • Demonstrable ability to attract new researchers, coach and mentor them;
  • • Ability to work collaboratively and productively with team members and multiple national and international stakeholders

Emoluments -Negotiable

Duration : Four years and renewable only once upon satisfactory performance.
