Ten-year-old Nakanyike puts on a show at Kawuma Open Chess championship

Unranked Maria Nakanyike put up a good performance during the Kawuma Open Chess championship that ended Monday in Kampala.

The ten year old who was making her first appearance in the ladies category managed to secure herself the 14th position with 3.5 points when she beat Christine Namyalo, Shanita Namaganda, Shifrah Nakyambadde and drew with Joan Nakimuli (1414).

Meanwhile topping the women's category was Fide Master (WFM) Ivy Amoko resurfaced with great vigor that rather led her to great victory during the same tournament.

Amoko ranked 1846 managed to scoop 7 points after getting six wins and two draws to win the lady's category that attracted 20 participants.

However, in the open category, the men were in a rather close-fitting competition which saw International Master (IM) Elijah Emojong (2327) fight a losing battle.

He drew with Chess Master (CM) Bob Bibasa (2178) and fellow IM Arthur Ssegwanyi (2340) in the fourth and second rounds respectively and concurrently lost to Fide Master (FM) Harold Wanyama (2273) and Mathias Sonko in the last two rounds of the tournament that pushed him to 14th position.

Wanyama came in first position with seven points after winning seven games and only lost to Ssonko in the fourth round.

Winners walked away with sh600, 000 for the ladies and sh1m for the open category respectively.

The event was sponsored by Prof. Medi Kawuma to a tune of sh4.2m while Tick Hotel part sponsored the four days event.
