 Witness account

Robert Ssemwanga, a fourth year student of Bachelor of Science in Building Economics and also the Prime Minister in the university‘s guild government was a witness to the incident that took place at Kyambogo University and he gives an account on what he saw on that fateful day;

I was in my office between 4:00pm and 5:00pm before I moved out to go for a rally at cricket oval.

I was passing near RAC building which is in the School of Management, about 20 meters away from my office when I heard someone screaming from the building and when I moved closeer to where the noise was coming from together with a few students, we found Mayinja quickly getting out of the ladies' wash room which is within the block, and he was having some blood stains on his hands and shirt.

Behind him was a closed door and inside was a faint voice screaming "please help me" some students got hold of Mayinja who was trying to flee the scene and when the door was opened, it was a heart breaking sight of a helpless Victoria who was seriously bleeding, the entire floor was covered with blood and the panga he had used was also on the floor covered with blood.

Ssemwanga said that Nagayi was clad in a pair of jean trousers and a blouse that were all stained with blood, her jeans were open probably because she was easing herself when he attacked her.

"She wailed helplessly and all the students at the scene were quite hesitant to go to her rescue probably because she was covered with blood and they were afraid of going next to her. As a leader, Ssemwanga said that he quickly mobilized some students to help and about five carried her to the university clinic which was about 40 metres away from the scene where she got quick first aid before transferring her to Nsambya Hospital," he said.

Ssemwanga who also spoke on behalf of the Guild government said the incident shouldn't be blamed to any party in the university but rather came as an eye opener on the kind of students that are admitted and it is important to know the background of the kind of people who are admitted at the university.

University police

Andrew Mugarura the Chief Security Officer of Kyambogo University, says that a group of students brought Mayinja to the university police post where he was detained briefly for about three hours.

"We later transferred him to Jinja road police at about 8:00pm because we feared that he would be lynched by some angry students because of what he had done," he said.

Mugarura says that in his findings as a reported case in Old taxi park police post, Mayinja and Nagayi were together operating a mobile money business from Kikubo in down town Kampala, and at some point Mayinja swindled about Sh.1.9 million from Nagayi who reported him to police after he had threatened violence if she continued to pester him for the money early last week.

Mayinja according to the police records in Old taxi park police post,  paid sh1.5m to Nagayi and made a written agreement to pay the remaining balance of Sh. 400,000. He made an apology in writing for his behavior and that's when he was released when the two finally agreed to make amends after counseling from the police post where he had been detained for a few hours.

University administration

David Kasuti, a senior administrator in the Dean of Students office also gave a statement on what happened on that day.

"I got a report that the incident happened in one of the toilets and when the young man came out, he was stained with blood on his shirt and hands, and as he tried to escape he was arrested by a group of students who took him to the university police post. The girl was taken to the university medical centre for first aid and later taken to Nsambya hospital," said Kasuti.

"However information coming to my desk is that these two (Mayinja and Nagayi) had started a mobile money business together where they had misunderstandings in the long run, something happened along the way and I am told that the girl was demanding for sh1.9m and he threatened to harm her," added Kasuti.

Kasuti however said that the university is going to cover all the medical bills of Nagayi at Nsambya hospital because that is the responsibility of the university considering the fact that the incident took place within the university premises.
