Proceeds from the run go towards the fight against Fitsula for the second year

Golf and squash are the events to set the pace for the Kabaka Ronald Mutebi's 61 birthday celebrations rolling next month.

A squash tournament is due on April 4-8 at Kampala Club while a golf tournament is set for April 9 at Uganda Golf Course, Kitante.

The squash event is perhaps the most fitting start of the sporting celebrations given the fact that the Kabaka is an active player of the sport.

Nile Breweries are sponsors of the event that will be held at Kampala Club, according to Uganda squash and Rackets Association (USRA) official Mathias Nyombi.

Squash is among the five new events organized as part of the celebrations besides Omweso, cycling, ekigwo (wrestling) and swimming.

The Kabaka Birthday run on April 10 whose finish and start will be at Lubiri Palace will be the event marking the celebrations. Over 10 runners are expected in the race that will have runners in 5km, 10km and 21km.

Proceeds from the run whose theme is "A re-energised youth, set for any challenge," will again go towards the fight against Fitsula for the second year.

While unveiling preparations, third Deputy Katikkiro of Buganda Apollo Makubuya, the organizing committee chairman for the birthday celebrations said.

"We are working hard to ensure that we have a colorful celebration. So far everything is going according to plan. By participating, you will have made a big contribution to this cause," said Makubuya who called up on the community to participate in the program.

Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga officially launched the activities at Bulange, Mengo last month.

Besides raising awareness for the fight against Fistula, Mayiga said the sports activities help people appreciate the importance of physical fitness and a healthy lifestyle.

Registration for the run is going on at CBS, New Vision, and Airtel braches at Shoprite Lugogo, Ben Kiwanuka Street, New Taxi Park and at Airtel Mobile Money.

The run is sponsored by Airtel, Vision Group, CBS, MAAD Advertising, Post Bank, Events Warehouse and Vita Foam.
