Ugandan boxer finally given all-clear

After a U-turn of events, welterweight Muzamir Kakande was finally cleared for the Africa Olympic Games qualifier in Yaounde, Cameroon.

The Ugandan boxer, who was blocked from boarding an Ethiopian Airlines flight to Cameroon at Entebbe International Airport on Monday, was due to jet out of the country aboard a Kenya Airways flight.

Kakande got the green light after Cameroon Boxing Federation secretary Mendouga Bertrand issued a special invitation to him on Wednesday.

The Monday mishap apparently arose after Uganda Boxing Federation (UBF) officials had mix-up in communication with the organisers.

Kakande's name was not included on the list of Ugandan boxers accredited to receive visas on arrival in Yaounde.

The boxer, who was a distraught man after the Monday fiasco, was delighted after learning of the news.

"I am very happy to get this opportunity to represent my country. My guard has been up, I am ready for the challenge," he exclaimed.

He was expected to arrive in Yaounde three hours just before the general weigh-in on Friday.

Kakande joins five other Uganda boxers in the Rio 2016 Olympic qualifier.

Ugandan head of delegation and UBF vice president administration Lt. Col. Godfrey Muwanzi who flew out on Tuesday helped to clear the mess in Yaounde.

Other boxers on the Bombers squad are Ronald Serugo (flyweight), Atanus Mugerwa (bantam), Suleiman Segawa (lightweight), Kenneth Katende (light heavyweight) and Mike Sekabembe (super heavyweight).
