Yumbe police fire tear gas in post-election fracas

Police in Yumbe Thursday afternoon had to fire tear gas to disperse supporters of Avako Naima Gule, the Yumbe district Woman MP aspirant who lost in the elections conducted Wednesday.

Avako Naima, the NRM flag bearer, lost the contest to Driwaru Zaitun who stood on the Independent ticket and polled 32,504 votes against  her 24394.

According to the District police commander Yumbe, Abubakar Musiho, Avako's supporters put barricades along the Yumbe- Moyo road and other key business routes protesting the March 09,elections.

He said irate supporters of Avako Naima also pelted stones at Driwaru's who were in jubilant mood at the Yumbe boma grounds this afternoon.

The police commander appealed for calm from both parties. He spoke to Arua One about the incident.

The Electoral Commission organized fresh elections for the Woman parliamentary seat in Yumbe following anomalies on the ballot papers during the February 18, 2016 elections.
