Africa Women in Sports meet opens

Uganda is soon amending the national sports policy and inclusion of the women and girl child participation will be priority

Uganda has hosted the Africa Women in Sports Association meeting at Munyonyo with aim of paving way for the continental meet next year and also the 7th World Women in Sports Convention due in 2018 in Gaborone, Botswana.

The event that has attracted senior sports women leaders from various countries in Africa will among other things look at improving and strengthening the different committees across the continent.

Opening the meeting, the assistant commissioner for sports, Sammy Odong said while opening the Africa Women in Sports Association (AWISA) technical working group that Uganda has already pioneered in empowering the women through recognizing women at various fora in sports and administration.

He said Uganda is soon amending the national sports policy and inclusion of the women and girl child participation will be priority and called on the women in Uganda to be positive at the research soon taking place.

"We will not only emphasize issues of administration, mobilization, inclusiveness, and sustainability but also advocacy, equal participation, equity and professionalism," said the commissioner Odong.

Odong also called on AWISA to pioneer to put in place the East Africa Women in Sports Commission to improve on the regional activities and lobby to the international working group on women and sports.

Uganda women in sports commission in conjunction with the NCS have hosted the meeting.

AWISA chairperson, Matilda Mwaba told the meeting that funding is a constraint to many African women who intend to join the movement especially in the northern and western Africa that their governments need a lot of sensitization.

"We will have resolved many issues in the two days," said Hadija Namanda a member of Uganda Sports Women Commission.
