Army council postpones election of UPDF MPs

President Yoweri Museveni, the Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces, will on Friday be at Bombo barracks to preside over the events

The UPDF supreme organ - Army Council - in a meeting today at Bombo Military barracks conducted other business except the process of electing Army representatives in Parliament.

According to Lt. Col. Paddy Ankunda, the UPDF spokesperson, the election exercise has been pushed to tomorrow as directed by the chairman, President Yoweri Museveni, who was busy attending to matters of national and regional importance.

"The chairman was busy and so he directed that the poll will be conducted tomorrow. The council conducted other business on the agenda," he said.

As the 10th Parliament continues to take shape, by the end of the day, the country will know who the ten Army representatives in Parliament would be.    
 
Earlier, Ankunda had said: "The function will take place today. The President will preside over the events. The Defence council will sit today and by the end of the day we will have these members of Parliament. The president will read the names of those nominated and the council will elect only ten from those who would have been nominated. This is being done in conjunction with the electoral commission." 
 
The current Army MPs include the UPDF's top rank and file led by Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala, UPDF deputy Chief of Defence Forces, Lt. Gen. Charles Agina, Gen. Elly Tumwine, Maj. Gen. Julius Oketta Facki, Brig. Phinehas Katirima, Brig. Ramadthan Kyamulesire, Maj. Sarah Mpabwa, Capt. Suzan Lakot and Col. Innocent Ocula, who replaced Gen. David Sejusa.
