Nine injured in Mengo explosion discharged

Mulago National referral hospital has discharged nine children who sustained injuries during an explosion recently. One of the victims however Jeremiah Mukambi 13, is still undergoing treatment at the hospital.

The incident took place last week at about 7.00pm, at a vacant pitch next to Kyaggwe Road primary school opposite Lubiri palace.

Some of the parents of the victims told New Vision that the children were playing with an object, which later was identified as a grenade, before it exploded.  One of the boys identified as Sam died on spot.

Some of the victims were first rushed to Mengo hospital for first aid and later referred to Mulago hospital for specialized treatment.

Those who have been discharged include; Ruhinga Amin, James Balyamuke, Silver Mpunzu, Ahmed Ramadan, Davis Muzora, Jacob Buzabalya, John Byakatonda, Richard Kafero and Humza Yaweh.

Speaking in an interview the hospital's spokesperson, Enock Kusasira said;

"Mukambi sustained a severe foot injury but he is receiving all the necessary care and soon will be discharged. Mukambi was transferred from the surgical ward on 2B where he was first admitted to the private orthopedic wing on 6C."

Some of the health workers taking care of him said;

"Mukambi is in stable condition but he needs more blood. At the moment the hospital does not have enough blood for patients in blood group O.

"The boy lost too much blood, he needs more blood but we don't have for his blood group." 

Mukambi's father, Matia Balinaine, commended the management of Mulago hospital for paying all the medical bills for his son.

"My son is getting all the necessary drugs and food, the director of this hospital told us that government will cater for everything," Balinaine said.
