Could Nile's lack of squad depth cost them the title

In other words, all of Nile's next five first round matches are expected to be tougher.

While Nile's 2-0 start to the season has left them the only unbeaten team in the UCA division 1 men's cricket league, no one is rushing to trumpet their title credentials.

For now judgement is being reserved, not only because of questions about Nile's squad depth but also because David Musoke's men are still to face the stronger guns in the division. Nile's two victories have come against Tornado and Wanderers, two teams expected to struggle for survival this term.

In other words, all of Nile's next five first round matches are expected to be tougher.

In fairness, Nile agree with all these assessments and are waiting, just like everyone else, for a better idea of their title chances.

"It's a bit too early to say whether we are title contenders but we are hoping for the best," said Nile veteran Martin Ondeko.

"We will wait at least until the end of the first round to see whether we will compete for the title."

Nile are considered to be behind champions Tornado Bee, Challengers, KICC and possibly Patidar in this year's title race yet it has to be pointed out that the same kind of assessment was made last year only for Nile to finish second.

"Our key is self-belief," Ondeko explained. "We also play as a unit and everyone concentrates on playing his role."

Nile lost key pieces from last season including their three top scorers but Ondeko says the "core of the team" remained intact in addition to acquisition of youngsters Zephaniah Arinaitwe, Richard Agamire and Simon Ayella.

So far, the moves look successful but time will offer a conclusive picture
