Police in Mukono district are holding a twenty seven-year old mother who flogged her own daughter to death. The incident occurred on Monday morning.

Nine-year old Shivan Nkrunziza, according to reports, was subjected to canes by her mother, Irene Mirembe, a resident of Ngandu village in Mukono Municipality, on Sunday.

The officer in charge of crime at Mukono Police station, Henry Ayebare said that Police was called to save Mirembe who was about to be lynched by an angry mob.

"Mirembe says she was disciplining the girl whose habit of theft had gotten out of hand," Ayebare said.

In her own words while at Police, Mirembe said the deceased 'had developed a habit of stealing big sums of money ranging between sh100,000-300,000.'

Mirembe, a housewife, said the money was being given to her by her husband, John Ndyabayika alias Kiviiri, who is abroad, to cater for the family of three children, Nkrunziza and her two siblings.

Ayebare said Mirembe will be arraigned in court and charged with murder after thorough investigations.

The deceased's body had deep bruises and cuts all over.

Frank Magezi, a neighbour to Mirembe, told New Vision that she (Mirembe) could have beaten the girl on Sunday.

On Monday morning, Mirembe reportedly rushed the girl to a nearby clinic after realising she was unwell.

"It was the nurse from the clinic who told her that the girl was already dead.

Panicked, Mirembe attempted to dump the body by the roadside and flee but the residents apprehended her," Magezi narrated.

The deceased's body was taken to Mulago city mortuary for postmortem.
