THE re-development project of the Catholic Martyrs Shrine of Namugongo has received a boost of sh50m from Uganda Telecom Limited (UTL).

The company’s secretary, David Nambale handed over the cheque to the Vicar General of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Kampala, Msgr. Charles Kasibante, during a function at Lubaga Archdiocese Catholic Secretariat on Tuesday.

Nambale said during the function: “We have the obligation to contribute towards this noble cause. The Catholic Martyrs Shrine of Namugongo is an important religious heritage site, which is why we remain committed to making the Pope’s visit a dignified event.”

The Metropolitan Vicar-General, Msgr. Charles Kasibante thanked UTL for the enormous contributions they had made towards the construction of Namugongo, through the mobile money platform. The Prelate later called upon all those that had made pledges to fulfill them.

“The money that has been given to us so far has enabled us to construct the shrines to a stage that befits a papal function. Those who knew Munyonyo before can testify that there was almost nothing. But today, you can easily recognize that it is a holy shrine. However, we still need a lot of money to complete the construction.”

“I appeal to all Ugandans of good will to continue donating money towards the completion of Namugongo and Munyonyo, even after the Pope has left. We want to elevate the shrines to an international stage that is fit for prayers, pilgrimages and tourism.”

The function was witnessed by the Chancellor of Kampala Archdiocese, Fr. Dr. Joseph Mary Ssebunnya and the Private Secretary of the Archbishop, the Rev. Fr. Charles Mpiima.

Also present was UTL’s public relations officer, Tony Achidria, the Digital Marketing Manager, Jackie Abwol and the M-Sente national sales manager, Joseph Ndoboli.
