THE Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives has informed pensioners and the public that following the decentralization of the pensions function, the ministry received a list of 330 pensioners from the Ministry of Public Service.

Out of this number, 177 Pensioners have been verified while 153 have not been verified.

Julius B. Onen permanent secretary Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives said the pensioners who were staff of the former Ministries of Commerce, Cooperatives and Marketing, Tourism, Trade and Industry and the current Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, whose names do not appear on the verified list are advised to report to Farmers House 3rd Floor, Room No. 160 for verification.

Onen asked the pensioners to come with all their Appointment letters; Valid Pension Identity Card; Confirmation letter; Retirement letter and any other relevant employment documents.

Government has decentralized the payment of pensions and gratuity to the respective institutions where pensioners retired from as part of the reform in the pension system.

The objective of the policy was to improve the management and accountability for pension payment which commenced in the financial year 2014/15.

Under this policy the ministry of public service would remain responsible for providing policy and oversight roles.

It was agreed that the ministry of public service would continue to pay monthly pensions to those who retired prior to the financial year 2014/15 until June 2015 to enable smooth transition to full decentralization in the financial year 2015/16.

Victor Bua, assistant commissioner, pensions department, ministry of public service said the government adopted the Integrated Personnel and Payroll System which manages both salaries and pensions payments.

Bua said a process has been ongoing to migrate all civil servants and those who have retired to this new system.

He said with the new system once an employee retires from the salary system he or she automatically transits to the pension system.

"Public service has been maintaining records of pensioners showing place of residence. With the new system, a pensioner has to show where they retired from and that is where they will receive their pensions under the decentralized records," Bua said.
