Five perish in Iganga accident

Five people have perished and five others admitted in critical condition after a speeding truck rammed into a taxi that had parked by the road side at Walugogo village, three kilometers along the Iganga - Jinja highway on Tuesday.

Five people have perished and five others admitted in critical condition after a speeding truck rammed into a taxi that had parked by the road side at Walugogo village, three kilometers along the Iganga - Jinja highway on Tuesday.


The dead have been identified as Haawa Namusobya a teacher at Victoria high school in Iganga,Yusuf Isabirye, a businessman at Iganga main market,Aisha Nakalani, a house wife in Iganga,Irene Muitesi and Saida Namukuve.

The accident happened at around 8.30 am during a heavy rain down pour.

According to an eyewitness, Henry Batala said the driver of the trailer registration number UAV671A which was heading to Kampala tried to avoid knocking a cyclist before ramming into the taxi.

The driver of the trailer ran away after the accident.

The injured who were rushed to Iganga main hospital have been identified as Hussein Masinya, a head teacher of Iganga Comprehensive High School,Emma Isiko,Faith Isiko,Getrude Kwanga,and Farouk Musasizi a security guard operating in Iganga.

Walugogo trading center has for past few years been  a hot spot for accidents mainly involving trucks which normally due to the sloppy nature of the place.

The in charge casualty ward Iganga main hospital,Doctor Sande Musoke said the injured sustained deep cuts on their heads, hands and legs.

He said four of the accident victims are closely being monitored since they sutained very deep cuts on their bodies.

“We believe they could have lost so much blood during the process,”he said

The officer in charge of traffic at Iganga central police station,Julius Muhoozi attributed the accident to the slippery road besides  over speeding.

He said the accident could have been avoided if the driver of the trailer was moving slowly.
