Organisers of this year’s horse competition are praying for good weather this weekend.

The Flametree Stables Equator Event, featuring cross-country and show jumping, will be held at Kijabijo, Gayaza in Wakiso district.

“We are praying for a dry weekend. You can’t have a good grip on slippery ground. Horses can also slip,” said senior instructor John Kinyua.

Organisers also say the horses are in good shape. ‘They are awesome,” said Flametree owner Miranda Bowser.

Kinya said a total of 35 horses and 32 riders could be in cation

The two-day event will have participants contesting in various age categories.

Eight year olds Kya McComb and Zoe Furness were amongst the youngsters that thrilled spectators at the previous edition last October.

Showing calmness and control beyond their years, Kya and Zoe led their ponies to victory in the pre-novice category in Uganda’s first equestrian competition.

Riding ‘Bullrush’, Kya and Zoe, on Blackjack, were part of an entry of 30 riders from six countries in the two-day event.

The Lala Haidara, Sonja McLaughlan and Katie Bowser trio was also unmatched in the team chasers score.

Flametree Stables is owned by Miranda Bowser. An accomplished horsewoman, Miranda moved to Uganda from England over 20 years ago and has been keeping horses and teaching people to ride ever since.

Nestled in the Gayaza countryside, Flametree Stables is 30 minutes away from Kampala.

The stables sit in 20 acres of woodland that includes the Flame tree which gives the stables their name.

Plans are on to have a racing competition on an even bigger course.
