The presidential flag bearer of Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Dr Kizza Besigye has said Prof Gilbert Bukenya's recent U-turn to support President Yoweri Museveni in next elections did not surprise him.

"No, I am not surprised at all, but disappointed. He (Bukenya) has been sometime critical of the government and Museveni and repeatedly talked about mafia in government."

In an interview with New Vision, Besigye added: "And he had now presented himself as presidential candidate to challenge the present leadership; to say now Museveni is the best candidate is disappointing."

Besigye, a three-time loser in the presidential competition against Museveni, called upon voters to peruse track records of candidates before election time to avoid being disappointed.

"It (U-turn) is a very sad commentary on all of us. We can't pursue principles, values and causes to their logical conclusions. The public is well advised to scrutinise our record, character at the time of election not to go by what we say," he implored.

While explaining his movement, Bukenya, who has been nursing presidential ambitions in the next elections, said: "There's no other candidate with the qualifications to run this country other than the incumbent President."

He said The Democratic Alliance (TDA) which he recently pledged support was "poisoned and has lost focus."

"TDA was poisoned and people who are there are very greedy. President Museveni has the right qualifications to lead this country," he said
