Seed nine Musa Sekiriba declared a major bid for the Nile Special Pool Open honour after beating Meddie Kalanzi 3-2 at Orange County in Nateete, a Kampala suburb, over the weekend.

“I qualified as a second runner up last year and I gave the top guns a headache. Now that I have won the regional title, it shows I have improved and this will be replicated at the grand finale,” warned Sekiriba.

Sekiriba, who dropped out at the quarter-final stage of the grand finale last year, showed great ambition with a commanding display in the regional qualifier.

He started off with a nervous 3-2 victory over Volta’s Glorious Donald but gained momentum in the closing stages leading to the 4-1 victory over Kalanzi in the final. Both players qualified for the grand final alongside third-placed Abdul Ssekitto.

At Dian’s Pub in Kanyanya, there was a shake-up of the status quo as the two-time area champion Iddi Walusimbi was shown an early exit.

Walusimbi lost to teammate Junior Bogere at the quarter final stage. But Bogere ran out of steam falling 4-0 to Hot Pool’s bench player Kevin Kaboha at the semifinals.
